The 2004 Q Open was yet another record breaker! We celebrated the 5th Anniversary of the Q Open, since its reintroduction in 2000, with a record 179 participants.
Queensland’s World #5 Natalie Grinham collected her 2nd trophy in as many weeks when she beat Heidi Mather 3-0. The week before Natalie won the Australian Open.
Unfortunately, for Mather it was a case of “always the bridesmaid, never the bride” for the third straight year. Whilst disappointing World #39 Mather recorded a good win against World #32 Melissa Martin.
World #69 Raj Nanda from Victoria (but born in Queensland!) won the Men’s International with a comfortable 3-0 win against Aaron Frankcomb. Raj would have been extremely confident going into the final knowing there wasn’t going to be much left in Aaron’s fuel tank.
The young AIS star played his final in the semi when he met a very determined Egyptian El Iraky Omar Abd El Aziz (or Omar for short) who just didn’t want to go away. After 2 hours 15 minutes Aaron prevailed with a nail biting 15-14 win in the 5th game.
There were many other great stories from the Championship. In short:
2004 Champions:
MEN’S: New Zealand’s Sam Atkins won the Premier Grade, Deception Bay’s Joel Smith won the A Grade, Mareeba’s Julius Krauss won the B Grade, Mackay’s Ben Courtice won the C Grade, Biloela’s Roy Horchner won the D Grade and Squash World’s Ricky Buckley won the E Grade.
LADIES: Squash World’s Peta Hughes won the Premier Grade, Scarborough’s Samantha Davies won the A Grade, Emerald’s Kacey Cusack won the B Grade, Squash World’s Taylor Sinclair won the C Grade and Scottvale’s Kelly Preston won the D Grade.
