Queenslanders win 6 titles
Queensland have simply dominated the 2004 Grays Australian Junior Graded Championships.
Six GREAT Champions emerged from the weekend ONE DAY Championship.
Led by Scarborough's Samantha Davies GIRL POWER struck and our team of 8 girls won 5 titles.
Logan's Andrew Fraser won the Boys C Grade to ensure Queensland won back the Q Squash Inform Connection Queensland Victoria Interstate Challenge.
Winning the A Grade Girls title has been the ultimate achievement for Samantha Davies since attending her first graded tournament in August 2000.
It has been a wonderful journey for the talented teenager who made an instant impact when she won the D Grade Girls event at the inaugural Brookside Junior Graded Tournament in 2000.
Sam won the final against Lyndal Morrison from NSW. The match promised so much after Lyndal beat the #1 seed Jessica Gillett 29-25 to reach the final but Sam controlled the match from the outset and ran out a comfortable winner 38-26.
Deception Bay's Jaymee Haylock won the B Grade Girls beating Sarah Cardwell in a very hard fought and closely contested final.
Jaymee sustained an injury half way through the contest but pushed on to win 25-22.
The Australian Junior Graded Championship is an event Q Squash favours when searching for a tournament to suit our Girls Development Program.
The AJGC provides a competition at a level which is consistent with where the girls are in terms of development.
Scarborough's Darcey Baptiste won the Beginner's Grade last year but this year we hit the jackpot with Bethany Brazier, Angela Fisher and Caitlin McCutchen all winning titles.
Brazier won the Girls D Grade beating fellow Queenslander Micaela Harradine, Fisher won the Girls C Grade and McCutchen won the Girls Novice Grade.
Scarborough's Bethany Brazier defeated Acacia Ridge's Micaela Harradine 39-29. Acacia Ridge's Angela Fisher won her final 37-24 and Deception Bay's Caitlin McCuthen won her final 49-16.
Andrew Fraser dominated his final winning 43-13. Fraser was the only shining light for the boys but one must note 3 of our 6 boys played in the Grade we won.
The event was well managed by Inform Connection. In its 3rd year the Australian Junior Graded Championship is a GREAT mix of squash for players at all levels of development.
There is a variety of match play including doubles, 15 minute timed matches and the newly formed 3/4 court Championship.
The Hi Tec 3/4 court Championship was a novel idea and captured the imagination of everyone. 116 players were randomly drawn and the whole knockout competition took just on an hour to complete.
Queenslander Samantha Davies served notice to the boys she is definately a force to be reckoned in this type of competition when she burst into the semi final. Unfortunately, she lost a tight match to Leigh Sands 2-1.
Scott Arnold won the competition but more interesting was the list of casualties along the way. Tom Steward, Chris Chapman (losing 0-2 to Sam Davies), Steve Robinson, Jessica Gillett and the list goes on!
To the sponsors of the event Grays, I Mask and Hi Tec thank you for supporting a GREAT JUNIOR EVENT.
To the I Mask Management (Max, June and Steve Moorhouse) thank you for your involvement in the Doubles Championship. From a Queensland perspective we value your attendance, support and generosity. Your Perpetual Trophy is simply the best I have seen.
